A Message from the Computer Information Systems Class - Grades 11/12

Dear Parents:

3D printing has become a widely used manufacturing method to produce objects that cannot be made by hand or using traditional methods. Increasing productivity, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and saving the cost, 3D printing has gradually become a replacement of traditional manufacturing methods (e.g. direct injection molding, numerical controlled cutting). Accordingly, the ICTS-11/12 would like U-Hill to have 3D printing technology.

The 3D printers would be used by a wide variety of students in different ways.

Business & Computers Department: • Learn 3D computer modeling by letting students print out model of what they made. • Potential for printing items for sale to develop entrepreneurship.

Tech Department: • Print out specific parts of custom tech projects. • Often faster than carving out the material yourself and more precise.

Art Department: • Create sculptures or parts of a statue precisely and with less waste. • Increases the quality of creations that students could make. • Students can learn how to create art digitally.

Science Department: • Creating custom labs / scale models of molecules, organs, organisms, etc.

In order to enable class printing and satisfy extra-curricular use, we propose to buy three Ultimaker 2+ printers, which have the highest printing resolution, operational speed and build volume. Using this combination, small objects with fine details can be printed for a class of 30 students in the maximum printing quality within 12 hours. (More details about the Ultimaker 2+ are available in the PowerPoint presentation below.)

We gave a presentation to the PAC at their February meeting and they have agreed to help us with our fundraising for these printers. After consulting with the retailer, we were offered a 5% educational discount for each printer and three free rolls of filament. With the education discount, including shipment fee, replacement parts and a good graphic computer for file processing, our final costs are CA$ 12,200. Our goal is to make our purchase as soon as possible so that the printers will benefit our school community this school year.

Please consider making a donation to our program to help bring 3D printers to our school. If you have questions, please view the PowerPoint presentation and video below or contact the following people:

Here's a presentation showing our plan for using the 3D printers:
