Message from U-Hill Sport & Art Committee

UHILL Music programs 2018-2019

The UHill Music program is a helpful way to provide balance to academic life, and also encourages self-confidence, creativity, integration of diverse skills such as social cooperation and critical thinking. Music has also been proven to encourage neural pathways helpful for academic thought.
There are currently 6 music programs in the 2018-19 school year: Intermediate wind ensemble, Senior wind ensemble, Senior string orchestra, Senior Concert Choir in grades 10-12, and grade 9 choir fine arts rotation. Next year the fine arts rotation will be in grade 8 with all other courses open to grade nine through twelve.

Music students participate in many events to build their skill, knowledge and leadership ability, such as afterschool workshops, weekly sectional practice and weekend retreats with guest clinicians. There are also numerous performances throughout the year for evening concerts, festivals, international performance tours, assemblies, community concerts, chamber ensembles, parent committee events and VSB district nights. This year different groups attended a weekend retreat in Harrison, and a performance tour to Los Angeles where they achieved Gold and Silver at the Heritage Festival, and also Gold at the Kiwanis Festival in Vancouver.

Many music performances/workshops happen out of school time, which relies heavily on students and volunteers to operate it smoothly.

What parents and the UHill community can do to help:
👉Talk with your children when they bring home the sign in form, make sure they understand the commitment, be serious and be respectful to teacher, volunteer & classmates time & effort. Make sure they sleep earlier and be on time for early morning rehearsals.
👉Coordinate with Mr. D. to be chaperones and supervisors in workshops, festivals and out of town performances, help to organize students’ schedules or events such as the Spring Gala Concert on Friday May 31st..
👉Be your child’s performance fans, come watch the concert and cheer for them.
Thank you for your consideration! Any parents that are interested can contact Mr. D through his school email address (cdewreede@vsb.bc.ca), parent music coordinators, or ask your child for Mr. D to contact them.

UHILL Sport programs 2018-2019

Talented Uhill students know how to balance their academic life, thereby Uhill atheletic program is expanding! There are many sport teams in 2018-2019 school years,

👉Fall: Cross country, 1 Soccer team, 4 Volleyball teams
👉Winter: 4 Basketball teams, 2 Table tennis teams, wrestling
👉Spring: Badminton, Tennis, Track n Field, Ultimate, Juvenile Volleyball

Led by Uhill Athletic Director, Mr. Jeffery Hodgson (jhodgson@vsb.bc.ca ), the sport teams rely heavily on volunteers to run smoothly ex. Sponsor teachers, Sponsor parents, Youth & Community/University coaches.

Each sport team player and volunteer has to devote 3-4 months after school time, with 1.5 months intensive involvement during sport season. With coming Gr. 8 & 9 students, there will be more demanding on sport teams.

What parent/Uhill family can help:
👉Talk with your children when they bring home the sign in form, make sure they understand the commitment, be serious and be respectful to volunteer & teammates’ time & effort. Every practice counts!
👉Coordinate with Mr. Hodgson, help to drive the players for away games, or take workshop to be sponsor parent, help to organize practice/game schedules.
👉Be your child’s team fans, come watch the game and cheer for them.
